Week 16: Ducks & Brussels

For week 16 I have two distinct themes: baby ducks and a visit to Brussels. But stay tuned, hopefully it is worth it!

In front of my office in Eindhoven is a large pond, or really a moat. This spring some ducks (or are they geese?-I am no expert on poultry) have been nesting around the building. One day the mother and the little ones were swimming in the pond:

And then it was time to get out. But the little ones cannot fly yet, so they were desperately struggling to get out while the mother waited anxiously:

Finally we put a wooden plank in the pond, and after a couple of minutes the little birdies figured out what to do:

The second half of the PAW is from a brief visit to Brussels, where my French cousin Nicole lives. We drove down on a Sunday, just to spend the day with Nicole and her family. Sunday is pizza day in their house, but this does not mean phoning the local pizza parlour. No, Nicole does it the hard way:

Meanwhile, her two black cats were doing what cats do–lounging around:

While the pizza dough rose, we drove down to the Sablon square in the centre of Brussels to take a little walk. The area is home to a large antiques market and several shops selling antiques, so one often sees scenes like this:

Then back to Nicole’s house, where the pizza production commenced in earnest:

And to finish it off, pizza or no pizza, no French dinner is complete without cheese at the end:

  1. interesting series of the ducks. Home made pizza can be excellent. I like the photo of the hands cuing the cheese.

  2. Love the climbing ducks, Nathan. And also the photo of the black cats, who look like they know the ducklings are above them. And the heads in the car aren’t shabby either. 🙂

    Best,
    B. D.
