Week 40: Photokina

Last weekend I went to Cologne to visit the Photokina trade show. Photokina is probably the most important photo equipment show in the world. It happens every two years. I go there to drool over new equipment, to visit the beautiful city of Cologne, and to meet up with my photo friends from all over the world. Such as Liz, who now lives in Manchester, but whom I know from my time in Brussels in the 1990s:

Or Tuulikki, originally from Finland, but now married to a Swedish guy (and my favourite Leica guru, Tom Abrahamsson) and living in Vancouver:

Photokina also offers the opportunity to see new, er, faces:

Then there is the equipment…this new 4/1700mm lens from Carl Zeiss weighs 256 kg. I suspect that it will be photographed more than sold. I have a hard time figuring out what the target market is:

Here is some guy studying a product brochure:

On Sunday we all met up at the Mulheim second-hand camera fair, always held in conjunction with Photokina. It is a nice change from the ultra-modernity of the trade show to a place where people look for equipment that is several decades old, and sometimes dress accordingly:

Finally, a couple of pictures of Cologne itself. The main attraction of the city is the magnificent cathedral:

Even when it rains, people still stop to admire it:
