Week 19: magic cactus, Agost ceramics kitsch, the beach

A somewhat shorter blog for this week, consisting mainly of pictures taken while cycling, having a beer on the beach, and just running my daily errands.

I think the highlight of the week was right in my garden (such as it is). My mother’s magic cactus showed signs of life for the first time this spring. It made us particularly happy because we now live in our own house close to the beach. This is the state of play on Saturday afternoon, so just before the start of the week:

Monday morning, in all its glory. By the afternoon, the flower was already showing signs of wilting, and a couple of days later it was gone:

On Sunday, I went out for one of my customary bike rides, to San Vicente, Maigmó and then home via Agost. Just after San Vicente I stopped to photograph this rather attention-grabbing wall of a swimming pool dealership:

Just before Agost there are vineyards, making simple, inexpensive but highly drinkable wine:

But the main business in Agost is not wine; rather, the town has a long tradition in ceramics, and outside the town there are several large outlets selling rather kitschy stuff for people to put in their gardens. I stopped by to take a look (yes, that is my bicycle):

After the bike ride, I stopped by our local mercadillo to buy a roasted chicken for lunch. Clearly, other people had the same idea:

The chicken man also sells ribs:

I had Friday off, and the light was very nice in the morning, so I walked down to the beach:

Later on Friday morning, I had an errand at our local tax office, an occasion made a bit more pleasant by the two doggies whose human was also in that same office:

And the waiting dog theme continued in the evening, when I went to our local supermarket to stock up on essentials for the weekend (beer, mainly, as there was plenty of food at home):

This person was shopping by bicycle, and was also buying liquids:

Saturday afternoon was warm but also very windy, so the beach was rather thinly populated. The wind was blowing in from the sea, so this family uses a storage box to shelter:

I was enjoying a beer at one of the bars on the promenade. In truth, I had better beer in the fridge at home, but there is something nice about a pint with a view:

So I sat there with my Leica M8 with a longish lens mounted, enjoyed my pint and looked at the people. One of life’s simple pleasures:
