Week 11: Revolution and pets

The week started with demonstrations against the government’s labour market reforms in about 60 Spanish cities, including Alicante. I often go to such events since they provide good photo opportunities. Violence at political rallies is extremely rare here in Spain, so safety is never a concern.

Apparently dogs and children also have an opinion about the Rajoy government:

This man got a comment from a passing old lady about his placard being in bad taste. It reads “If you don’t agree to get fucked, you will be fired”:

It did not take long before the demo disintegrated, and the participants sat down for the usual Sunday afternoon refreshments:

The remaining images are a more mixed bag from the week.

We have a photography club at the office (I am the vice president, meaning that I don’t really have to do anything of substance). This week Lightbox held its annual general meeting. Corinne is a new and very enthusiastic member of the junta. Here she is explaining details of a planned club trip to Iceland:

I go for haircuts at a Chinese place in the centre of town. They are open 7 days a week and always have time to cut my hair for the princely sum of 9 Euro. I went this week, and had to wait a bit. While waiting, I was observing the nail lady helping the little boy (I don’t know if he is her son) with his writing:

Friday I went for lunch with a couple of colleagues at one of our customary places, El Capricho de Raquel. For added entertainment, we had a photo session taking place at the neighbouring table. The restaurant had decided to have some nice brochures made and to upgrade their website, so they hired a photographer to take some food shots:

I suspect that this plate of prawns is more generous than the one you would actually get served:

The waitress looks on. This is serious business:

Finally, my pets.

When I walk Cheeta in the morning, I usually stop by the bakery to buy a baguette. Cheeta waits for me outside:

Taco the Cat likes to arrange himself among the stuffed animals on my daughter’s bed. Here he is lazily waking up:

Now fully awake and somewhat miffed because I have put some liquid on his neck where he cannot lick it off. This is the whole idea; the liquid was a worm cure that is designed to be absorbed through the skin, so you do not have to fight to force a pill down the cat’s throat:

  1. Like your cat!

That’s not to say I didn’t like the other shots, but cats are special.
