The conference was Friday and Saturday, and I then went to visit my daughter in Cardiff and my son in Bath.<\/p>\n<p>But I also had some interesting light at home, and a walk in an Alicante neighbourhood which I rarely visit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>49_1<\/strong><br \/>\nMorning light on the mountains in the distance, as seen in the street where I live:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_1.jpg\" alt=\"L1008450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_2<\/strong><br \/>\nBenches in the park in morning sunlight:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_2.jpg\" alt=\"L1008446\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_3<\/strong><br \/>\nTuesday morning I went to Carglass to replace my windshield that had fallen victim to an errant golf ball. The shop is located in a dodgy neighbourhood, at least by local standards:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_3.jpg\" alt=\"L1008457\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_4<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother construction project in suspended animation:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_4.jpg\" alt=\"L1008455\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_5<\/strong><br \/>\nNot sure what the idea is here, but at least there are foreign language skills on display:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_5.jpg\" alt=\"L1008453\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_6<\/strong><br \/>\nVivid colours:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_6.jpg\" alt=\"L1008454\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_7<\/strong><br \/>\nFaded colours:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_7.jpg\" alt=\"L1008459\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_8<\/strong><br \/>\nLooking south from my office:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_8.jpg\" alt=\"L1008466\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_9<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Cheese Lady. She owns La Queser\u00c3\u00ada de Tibi, based in the inland mountain town of Tibi. They produce all manner of goat cheese, all organic and delicious. Once a week she comes to our office and sells her cheese out of her car. The orders are placed using a spreadsheet on Google Docs:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_9.jpg\" alt=\"L1008470\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The rest of the images are from Oxford and Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>49_10<\/strong><br \/>\nI flew to Bristol on Thursday morning and took the train to Oxford. At this time of year it gets dark early, so even though it was only around 5 p.m. when I walked from the Oxford train station to my hotel, it was already dark. Sadly, I did not have time to visit:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_19.jpg\" alt=\"L1008551\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_20<\/strong><br \/>\nThe St Mary Magdalen church is right in the middle of town:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_20.jpg\" alt=\"L1008555\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_21<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother city cemetery, on St Cross Street:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_21.jpg\" alt=\"L1008567\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_22<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Sheldonian Theatre:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_22.jpg\" alt=\"L1008560\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_23<\/strong><br \/>\nQuiet morning street:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_23.jpg\" alt=\"L1008566\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_24<\/strong><br \/>\nSaddle advertising:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_24.jpg\" alt=\"L1008556\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Around lunchtime on Saturday, I made my way from Oxford to Cardiff, where I was going to visit my daughter and spend the night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>49_25<\/strong><br \/>\nI had to change trains at Didcot Parkway and passed the time photographing the nearby cooling towers:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_25.jpg\" alt=\"L1008581\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_26<\/strong><br \/>\nOnce in Cardiff, I checked into my hotel, walked to my daughter&#8217;s dorm to see how she lives, and then we went into town for dinner. Monica is now a young adult, but she was still happy to see Mario:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_26.jpg\" alt=\"L1008585\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_27<\/strong><br \/>\nFacebook picture with Mario:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_27.jpg\" alt=\"L1008586\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_28<\/strong><br \/>\nOn Sunday morning we went to the neighbourhood where Monica will live next year. At UK universities students usually live on campus the first year but are then expected to find their own accommodation for subsequent years. So even though it is only December, Monica and her friends have already lined up a house in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood. This is one of the landmarks, the Royal George pub on Crwys Road:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_28.jpg\" alt=\"L1008598\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_29<\/strong><br \/>\nCity Road, the main street of the neighbourhood:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_29.jpg\" alt=\"L1008593\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_30<\/strong><br \/>\nIf the pizza makes you sick, you can get cured next door:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_30.jpg\" alt=\"L1008603\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_31<\/strong><br \/>\nPolish pickles:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_31.jpg\" alt=\"L1008602\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_32<\/strong><br \/>\nNew York Deli in the centre of Cardiff. We had delicious vegetarian burgers for lunch here:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_32.jpg\" alt=\"L1008610\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_33<\/strong><br \/>\nWe walked past the magnificent Millennium Stadium, the high temple of Welsh rugby and the place which hosted the FA Cup while Wembley was being rebuilt:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/49_33.jpg\" alt=\"L1008615\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>49_34<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd then I said goodbye to Monica (not for long, she is coming to Alicante next week to spend Christmas here), and headed to Bath.
