But first, earlier in the week I had to buy something in Utrecht one afternoon, so the first two images are snaps from that city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main<\/strong><br \/>\nMain pedestrian street, contre-jour:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20.jpg\" alt=\"1296\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nThe alternates<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 1<\/em><br \/>\nAnother snap from Utrecht:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt1.jpg\" alt=\"1295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next seven images are from the drive home from Calais.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 2<\/em><br \/>\nMy first stop was in Dunquerke. This is the beach from where over 300,000 British and French soldiers were evacuated in May 1940, under constant enemy fire. Four years later, these men crossed the Channel again to liberate Western Europe:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt2.jpg\" alt=\"1300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 3<\/em><br \/>\nThere is a monument on the beach:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt3.jpg\" alt=\"1303\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 4<\/em><br \/>\nCloser view; the &#8220;remembrance&#8221; poppies that one finds at hundreds of monuments and cemeteries scattered around Europe:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt4.jpg\" alt=\"1305\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 5<\/em><br \/>\nThese days, the beach is used for more peaceful purposes, thankfully:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt5.jpg\" alt=\"1315\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 6<\/em><br \/>\nI continued on into Belgium. This is the &#8220;Flanders Fields&#8221; that have seen so much bloodshed in the 20th century, here near Westvleteren:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt6.jpg\" alt=\"1319\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 7<\/em><br \/>\nI then stopped at the beach resort of De Panne. It was not exactly beach weather:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt7.jpg\" alt=\"1330\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 8<\/em><br \/>\nAlong the motorway in Belgium, a common sight; it is not a coincidence that the symbol of Brussels is a little peeing boy:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt8.jpg\" alt=\"1376\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thursday evening, with my wife and daughter safely in London, my son and I went into Amsterdam for a beer and dinner. The last four images are from that evening.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 9<\/em><br \/>\nGlorious late afternoon light:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt9.jpg\" alt=\"1336\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 10<\/em><br \/>\nWe went to buy some beer at The Cracked Kettle. Here is the owner:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt10.jpg\" alt=\"1344\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 11<\/em><br \/>\nAcross from The Cracked Kettle is the best bar in Amsterdam, Gollem. It has an amazing selection of Belgian beers, at least 10 on tap at any given time, including the magnificent Kwak. Here is my son enjoying a glass of it:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2007\/20alt11.jpg\" alt=\"1347\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 12<\/em><br \/>\nWe then went to have dinner at an Argentine restaurant and walked back to the car, enjoying the beautiful city.
