There is a full gallery (see link at the end of this blog entry), but here I chose some images fro my wanderings around the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1_1<\/strong><br \/>\nThe death of Michael Jackson apparently touched people everywhere:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_1.jpg\" alt=\"L1006729\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next 10 pictures are from Wroc\u00c3\u2026\u00e2\u20ac\u0161aw&#8217;s main art museum. Even though it is walking distance from my sister&#8217;s apartment, I had never visited it, and she had not been there for many years. So, we went on Friday and we did not regret it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1_2<\/strong><br \/>\nThe main hall of the museum:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_2.jpg\" alt=\"L1006875\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_3<\/strong><br \/>\nOn the ground floor, there are sculptures, mainly sarcophaguses from around 1000 years ago. Most of them were originally in churches around the city, but were taken to the museum to better preserve them:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_3.jpg\" alt=\"L1006877\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_4<\/strong><br \/>\nOn the second, third and fourth floors there is the usual mix of religious and portrait paintings, pretty boring actually, except perhaps this painting which shows that people in the old days were not as hung up about breastfeeding in public as they are today in some countries:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_4.jpg\" alt=\"L1006917\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_5<\/strong><br \/>\nThe real gem of the museum is the top, 5th, floor, which has art from the 1960s through today. It was a real revelation:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_5.jpg\" alt=\"L1006892\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_6<\/strong><br \/>\nFaces:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_6.jpg\" alt=\"L1006893\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_7<\/strong><br \/>\nMan with tyre, by Magdalena Abankowicz:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_7.jpg\" alt=\"L1006895\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_8<\/strong><br \/>\nKarl is there too:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_8.jpg\" alt=\"L1006898\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_9<\/strong><br \/>\nFace, by Anna Szapocznikow:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_9.jpg\" alt=\"L1006899\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_10<\/strong><br \/>\nHolocaust-inspired work, by Anna Szapocznikow:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_10.jpg\" alt=\"L1006902\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_11<\/strong><br \/>\nMagdalena Abankowicz room:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_11.jpg\" alt=\"L1006906\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_12<\/strong><br \/>\nFaceless communist men:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_12.jpg\" alt=\"L1006909\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_13<\/strong><br \/>\nA work by one of the most celebrated Polish artists from the post-war era, W\u00c3\u2026\u00e2\u20ac\u0161adys\u00c3\u2026\u00e2\u20ac\u0161aw Hasior:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_13.jpg\" alt=\"L1006912\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After seeing all this modern art, I walked to one of the many churches, St. Wojciech (Saint Adelbert of Prague). It was supposed to have a creepy crypt, but I found no way of accessing it. Nonetheless, the church turned out to be rather interesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1_14<\/strong><br \/>\nLike most Polish churches, this one venerates the Virgin Mary:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_14.jpg\" alt=\"L1006943\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_15<\/strong><br \/>\nThe nativity scene was modern, quite surprising:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_15.jpg\" alt=\"L1006936\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_16<\/strong><br \/>\nIn fact, it was almost abstract:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_16.jpg\" alt=\"L1006936\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_17<\/strong><br \/>\nMemorial plaque for the victims of the Armenian genocide in Turkey in 1915:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_17.jpg\" alt=\"L1006939\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_18<\/strong><br \/>\nI am not sure who this guy is, I just liked the light falling on him:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_18.jpg\" alt=\"L1006942\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_19<\/strong><br \/>\nI continued my walk across Ostr\u00c3\u0192\u00c2\u00b3w Tumski and crossed one of river Odra&#8217;s tributaries on the Piaskowy Bridge. By now the sun had set, and the light was magic:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_19.jpg\" alt=\"L1006953\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_20<\/strong><br \/>\nI walked along the Odra and enjoyed the view of Wroc\u00c3\u2026\u00e2\u20ac\u0161aw University, where my sister studied back in the 1960s:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_20.jpg\" alt=\"L1006959\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_21<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother view of the university:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_21.jpg\" alt=\"L1006964\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_22<\/strong><br \/>\nThere is a lot of interesting history in Wroc\u00c3\u2026\u00e2\u20ac\u0161aw. This plaque commemorates a clandestine radio station which was broadcasting during the martial law years 1981-1989:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_22.jpg\" alt=\"L1006981\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_23<\/strong><br \/>\nThis plaque commemorates Polish support for the Hungarian revolution in 1956:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_23.jpg\" alt=\"L1007023\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_24<\/strong><br \/>\nWroc\u00c3\u2026\u00e2\u20ac\u0161aw&#8217;s city hall dates back to the 14 century. This is the main hall on the ground floor:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_24.jpg\" alt=\"L1007004\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_25<\/strong><br \/>\nTypical architecture from the 19th century:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2012\/1_25.jpg\" alt=\"L1007015\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1_26<\/strong><br \/>\nFeniks (Phoenix) is an old department store.
