The purpose was to see some large-scale photos that are currently displayed on the walls of some buildings in the centre. I started at a neighbourhood near the Basilica Santa Mar\u00c3\u00ada, a quiet area with narrow and hilly streets:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_1.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0626\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_2<\/strong>:<br \/>\nThe basilica, one of Alicante&#8217;s two cathedrals. This one is the starting point for the traditional Santa Faz pilgrimage in the spring, which now has been cancelled two years in a row:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_2.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0623\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_3<\/strong>:<br \/>\nOn the wall of a municipal building on Plaza Sant\u00c3\u00adsima Faz, there was an exhibition of photos by and of disabled people:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_3.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0617\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_4<\/strong>:<br \/>\nI sauntered around the neighbourhood a bit, stopping to photograph various little details as I like to do:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_4.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0625\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_5<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_5.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0624\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_6<\/strong>:<br \/>\nA curious piece of graffiti, &#8220;I love&#8221;, in Russian:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_6.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0627\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_7<\/strong>:<br \/>\nFresh paint and urban fauna:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_7.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0629\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_8<\/strong>:<br \/>\nCalle Mayor, looking almost as before the pandemic, except for the occasional mask (they are still mandatory in all indoor spaces but not outside):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_8.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0630\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_9<\/strong>:<br \/>\nPlaza Portal de Elche, a lovely wooded square next to a busy street, with a small bar in the centre:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_9.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0632\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_10<\/strong>:<br \/>\nAnother square with impressive trees, lined by bars and restaurants. Is official name is Plaza Gabriel Mir\u00c3\u00b3 but everyone calls it Plaza de Correos because Alicante&#8217;s main post office is there:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_10.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0635\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_11<\/strong>:<br \/>\nA busker has tried to get some money from the restaurant guests, but has now given up and is walking away to look for a more profitable spot:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_11.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0636\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_12<\/strong>:<br \/>\nDetail, Calle Italia:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_12.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0637\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_13<\/strong>:<br \/>\nFinally, I arrived at Malatesta, my favourite watering hole in Alicante. It is my favourite watering hole because it has Tripel Karmeliet on tap, a truly glorious achievement of European culinary culture:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_13.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0638\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_14<\/strong>:<br \/>\nA random snap from my neighbourhood in a suburb of Alicante. A cat, seemingly waiting for the bus:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_14.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0641\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_15<\/strong>:<br \/>\nWe marked the departure of Justyna to another EU job in Brussels last week. Now it was actually her last day in our office, and we did a brief photo session on our terrace:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_15.jpg\" alt=\"DSF8048\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_16<\/strong>:<br \/>\nOn Tuesday evening I was back in the city, having dinner with a couple of people at my (currently) favourite restaurant in the centre. A lot of other people had similar ideas:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_16.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0645\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_17<\/strong>:<br \/>\nAfterwards, on my way to the tram home, I saw this amusing scene; it is as if the cat is checking out the woman on the bench down the street:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_17.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0648\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_18<\/strong>:<br \/>\nOn Wednesday, we hosted a meeting of our stakeholders from around Europe, the first large-scale meeting in 1 1\/2 years. It was a hybrid meeting, with about half of the participants on site and the rest online. This is how all our meetings will be going forward&#8211;there will always be an option to participate online. Still, it was great to be with those people again. You can do many things on Zoom but spontaneous side conversations like this one are much easier when people are physically there. This is one aspect of the event that the online participants could not enjoy:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_22.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0655\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_23<\/strong>:<br \/>\nDifficult light, but still nice:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_23.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0656\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_24<\/strong>:<br \/>\nThe offspring of my mother&#8217;s cactus continued to give us pleasure:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_24.jpg\" alt=\"DSF0661\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_25<\/strong>:<br \/>\nI finished the week with a bike ride to Tibi, a village in the mountains about 40 km from my house. At the outset, the mountains were hazy:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_25.jpg\" alt=\"1010763\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_26<\/strong>:<br \/>\nOn one of the many climbs on the way to Tibi, I photographed the road markings left over from the Vuelta a Espa\u00c3\u00b1a race a few weeks earlier; it says &#8220;Tibi with sport&#8221; in the local dialect Valenciano:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_26.jpg\" alt=\"1010764\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_27<\/strong>:<br \/>\nThe final climb to Tibi. Pretty but hard:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_27.jpg\" alt=\"1010769\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_28<\/strong>:<br \/>\nFinally, I reached my goal, Lili&#8217;s goat cheese shop:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_28.jpg\" alt=\"1010774\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_29<\/strong>:<br \/>\nThere was a customer in the shop, which made me happy since I had been worried about the impact of the Covid pandemic on Lili&#8217;s business:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_29.jpg\" alt=\"1010770\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_30<\/strong>:<br \/>\nLili wrapping my purchase.She told me that she was doing OK; her restaurant sales had gone down but there was lots of traffic in her shop:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_30.jpg\" alt=\"1010773\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_31<\/strong>:<br \/>\nThe thing about Tibi is that there are hard climbs to get into the village, and also a 2.5 km climb at 8-9% to get out of the village. This pass also featured in this year&#8217;s Vuelta. For a 60-year old guy with no help from the pharmaceutical industry, this is quite a challenge:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2021\/39_31.jpg\" alt=\"1010782\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>39_32<\/strong>:<br \/>\nIn the afternoon, I got my reward for the hard cycling.
