She is one of the few volunteers who have gone back to the office while the vast majority of us continue to work from home. She is quite pleased with her working conditions (the mask is only needed when someone else comes to her office):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_1.jpg\" alt=\"1040901\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_2<\/strong><br \/>\nBack to cycling. One day I went to Busot and then on to Jijona. The 10 km road between the two towns is cycling paradise:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_2.jpg\" alt=\"1160233\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_3<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_3.jpg\" alt=\"1160230\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_4<\/strong><br \/>\nPride week decoration, Jijona town hall. Just shows how far we have come; Jijona is a conservative town, but celebrating pride is totally mainstream in this country:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_4.jpg\" alt=\"1160227\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_5<\/strong><br \/>\nA random grab shot from my local beach; the scene made me smile:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_5.jpg\" alt=\"1160235\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_6<\/strong><br \/>\nOne afternoon I stopped in the harbour of El Campello to take a walk there. Of course we sat outside, and there was adequate distance between tables:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_14.jpg\" alt=\"1040926\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_15<\/strong><br \/>\nOn Friday I had a dentist appointment. My dentist is in the neighbourhood where I used to live, and afterwards I went for a brief, sentimental walk in the small park where I used to walk Cheeta in happier times:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_15.jpg\" alt=\"1040925\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_16<\/strong><br \/>\nMy daily pre-work bicycle rides continue to provide me with exercise, fresh air and sometimes really interesting skies:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_16.jpg\" alt=\"1160247\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_17<\/strong><br \/>\nThe light is really nice in the morning (after 10-11 a.m. all the clouds are gone and it is back to boring blue sky):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_17.jpg\" alt=\"1160257\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_18<\/strong><br \/>\nJust outside Busot there is a spot where I sometimes meet spectators:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_18.jpg\" alt=\"1160250\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_19<\/strong><br \/>\nOnce the goats are satisfied that I am harmless, they return to their breakfast:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_19.jpg\" alt=\"1160253\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_20<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_20.jpg\" alt=\"1160254\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_21<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_21.jpg\" alt=\"1160258\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now that I work from home, I do not get to the centre of Alicante that often. But during this week I did go on a couple of occasions. The remaining images in this blog are from those two walks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>27_22<\/strong><br \/>\nUrban fauna, Plaza Seneca:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_22.jpg\" alt=\"1040911\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_23<\/strong><br \/>\nSign of the times:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_23.jpg\" alt=\"1040909\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_24<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother sign of the times&#8211;someone put up a handbill criticising the environmental impact of the fashion industry:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_24.jpg\" alt=\"1040907\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_25<\/strong><br \/>\nWhile walking around, I noticed that many of the small shops in the centre had these stickers on the floor at the entrance, encouraging people to shop in such shops to help them get past the Covid depression:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_25.jpg\" alt=\"1040970\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_26<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother sign of the times&#8211;two children in front of the surfer statue in Alicante harbour, with masks:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_26.jpg\" alt=\"1040944\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_27<\/strong><br \/>\nAlong the waterfront, I was delighted to find an art exhibition by the Belgian sculptor Arne Quinze, called &#8220;My Secret Garden&#8221;. He works with aluminum and vivid colours. I love it when art is placed in a place where everyone can enjoy it:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_27.jpg\" alt=\"1040946\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_28<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_28.jpg\" alt=\"1040948\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_29<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_29.jpg\" alt=\"1040949\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_30<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_30.jpg\" alt=\"1040950\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_31<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_31.jpg\" alt=\"1040952\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_32<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_32.jpg\" alt=\"1040953\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_33<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_33.jpg\" alt=\"1040957\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_34<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_34.jpg\" alt=\"1040959\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_35<\/strong><br \/>\nAs I walked down along the waterfront, I noticed this impressive boat from Poland, as evidenced by the registration and the flag. Few people can afford something like this, especially in what is still a relatively low-income country. The owner must be a rich businessman, a corrupt government official, a senior figure in the Catholic church, or a high-ranking member of an organised crime group:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_35.jpg\" alt=\"1040962\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_36<\/strong><br \/>\nI walked on to Calle San Francisco, popularly known as Calle de las Setas (&#8220;Mushroom Street&#8221;). There was a fair amount of human traffic, but many of the shops were still closed, especially those that cater mainly to tourists, like souvenir shops:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_36.jpg\" alt=\"1040968\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_37<\/strong><br \/>\nConstruction wall near Calle San Francisco, with incomprehensible anti-Canada graffiti that has since been edited, and an anti-bullfighting slogan with which I fully sympathise:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_37.jpg\" alt=\"1040969\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_38<\/strong><br \/>\nWalking back towards my car, I passed Plaza Portal de Elche with its huge Australian Banyan trees that provide delightful shade here all day:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_38.jpg\" alt=\"1040972\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_39<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_39.jpg\" alt=\"1040971\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>27_40<\/strong><br \/>\nFinally, the fa\u00c3\u00a7ade of Alicante&#8217;s city hall with the usual Spanish, Valencian and Alicante flags (there is also an EU flag outside the frame) and now also a black ribbon for the victims of Covid-19:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2020\/27_40.jpg\" alt=\"1040973\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another mixed bag this week, with photos taken while cycling, walking in the centre of Alicante, and visiting the fish auction in the harbour of my suburb, El Campello. 27_1 I start with a picture of our Polish secretary Kasia.
