This week the festivities reached their climax on Wednesday night, so the selection is dominated by that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main<\/strong><br \/>\nBut first a little snippet of family life on a nearby street. It is as if the two little boys are checking out the little girl:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25.jpg\" alt=\"L1005425\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nThe alternates<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 1<\/em><br \/>\nThe figures for the Hogueras de San Juan were not just in the centre of Alicante, but also right in our neighbourhood, 5 minutes walk from our house:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25alt1.jpg\" alt=\"L1005434\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 2<\/em><br \/>\nDetail:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25alt2.jpg\" alt=\"L1005429\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 3<\/em><br \/>\nMore detail. Channel 9 is a local channel which broadcasts in Valenciano:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25alt3.jpg\" alt=\"L1005430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then the big day arrived, June 24th. Conveniently, it is a public holiday.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 4<\/em><br \/>\nOne of the reasons I was looking forward to this day is that it would be the end of the fireworks, which had been a constant feature of the preceding week. They do not bother me, but my dog would go crazy every time. In the morning, one could see the remains of the previous night:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25alt4.jpg\" alt=\"L1005436\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 5<\/em><br \/>\nAt around 8 a.m., a small marching band walks around the neighbourhood, making sure everyone is awake:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25alt5.jpg\" alt=\"L1005439\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 6<\/em><br \/>\nThis elderly gentleman had some trouble keeping up with the rest of the band:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25alt6.jpg\" alt=\"L1005441\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 7<\/em><br \/>\nFinally, night fell. The climax of the San Juan celebrations is the burning of the statues, of course accompanied by still more fireworks. The main event was in front of the town hall, but we chose to go to our local version in Playa San Juan. It was supposed to start at midnight, but this being Spain, it was delayed by 1\/2 hour or so. The crowd waited patiently:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25alt7.jpg\" alt=\"L1005514\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 8<\/em><br \/>\nFinally, we have ignition:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/25alt8.jpg\" alt=\"L1005520\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 9<\/em><br \/>\nNow in full blaze.
