{"id":224,"date":"2009-04-09T06:54:21","date_gmt":"2009-04-09T05:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fotocycle.dk:80\/paws\/?page_id=224"},"modified":"2009-04-09T06:54:21","modified_gmt":"2009-04-09T05:54:21","slug":"week-13-sierra-nevada","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.fotocycle.dk\/paws\/?page_id=224","title":{"rendered":"Week 13: Sierra Nevada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My son from England is spending his Easter vacation with us, so we are doing things together as a family, including an end-of-season skiing trip to Sierra Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>But first a nice discovery right here in Alicante.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main<\/strong><br \/>\nOne of Alicante&#8217;s central spots is called Puerta del Mar. It is a touristy area with hotels, bars and discos. Recently, while walking through it, I saw this extremely promising sign on the door of a bar:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13.jpg\" alt=\"L1003287\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nThe alternates<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 1<\/em><br \/>\nAnd the sign was telling the truth. The bar is owned by a Spanish-Dutch couple and has now been classified as one of my habitual watering holes:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt1.jpg\" alt=\"L1003285\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then, on Friday afternoon we drove the 400 km to Sierra Nevada, the closest ski resort to Alicante. Paradoxically, it is to the south of here, but because it is at a high altitude, there is still enough snow even in April, following the relatively harsh winter this year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 2<\/em><br \/>\nThe first stop along the A7 motorway. My son and daughter always get sleepy when we drive:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt2.jpg\" alt=\"L1003402\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 3<\/em><br \/>\nFearsome guard dog at the petrol station:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt3.jpg\" alt=\"L1003411\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 4<\/em><br \/>\nOnce we passed Granada, the last 30 km up to the Sierra Nevada were along a road like this:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt4.jpg\" alt=\"L1003529\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 5<\/em><br \/>\nAnd these are the kind of views on offer:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt5.jpg\" alt=\"L1003418\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 6<\/em><br \/>\nWe arrived at our hotel just around sunset:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt6.jpg\" alt=\"L1003430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next morning, my wife and children hit the slopes, while I drove back to Granada to explore that city. <\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 7<\/em><br \/>\nAnother view of the mountain road:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt7.jpg\" alt=\"L1003536\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 8<\/em><br \/>\nMountain flowers:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt8.jpg\" alt=\"L1003533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 9<\/em><br \/>\nSaturday evening, another glorious sunset watched by a couple:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt9.jpg\" alt=\"L1003552\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 10<\/em><br \/>\nThis is what they were looking at:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt10.jpg\" alt=\"L1003548\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 11<\/em><br \/>\nSame mountains, but about 12 hours later, at sunrise on Sunday morning:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/13alt11.jpg\" alt=\"L1003554\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In case you wonder whether I took any pictures in Granada, the answer is: YES, of course!
