{"id":190,"date":"2009-02-17T22:46:01","date_gmt":"2009-02-17T21:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fotocycle.dk:80\/paws\/?page_id=190"},"modified":"2009-03-22T12:43:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-22T11:43:00","slug":"week-6-four-countries","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.fotocycle.dk\/paws\/?page_id=190","title":{"rendered":"Week 06: Four countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week&#8217;s PAW spans four countries: Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and of course Spain. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Main<\/strong><br \/>\nI spent Saturday night at a friend&#8217;s house in Grembergen, a village near Dendermonde, which in turn is somewhere between Brussels and Ghent. When I woke up Sunday morning, I went for a brief walk in the very sleepy village. This is what the main street looks like:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6.jpg\" alt=\"L1002090\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nThe alternates<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 1<\/em><br \/>\nBut there are some nice places too:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt1.jpg\" alt=\"L1002106\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 2<\/em><br \/>\nMy friend&#8217;s cat barely tolerated me:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt2.jpg\" alt=\"L1002109\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I then took a train back to Brussels, where I met up with fellow LUG members Michiel and Philippe to prowl the markets with our Leicas (my pictures from the markets are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frozenlight.eu\/brusselsmarkets\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.frozenlight.eu\/brusselsmarkets', 'here']);\" >here<\/a> but please finish this weekly blog first).<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 3<\/em><br \/>\nHere they are at the Gare du Midi market. Philippe&#8217;s sensor wore out so he had to insert a fresh one:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt3.jpg\" alt=\"L1002144\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 4<\/em><br \/>\nWe had lunch at a cafe on Place Jeu de Balles, site of a large antiques\/junk market. Here is Philippe talking to me (<em>photo by Michiel Fokkema<\/em>):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt4.jpg\" alt=\"L1002175\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 5<\/em><br \/>\nPhilippe and lunch. The main ingredients are typically Belgian:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt5.jpg\" alt=\"L1002180\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 6<\/em><br \/>\nWe then walked back to the train station. Comics strips are a recognised and treasured art form in Belgium:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt6.jpg\" alt=\"L1002239\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 7<\/em><br \/>\nI have no idea what is the story behind this:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt7.jpg\" alt=\"L1002241\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the train station we said goodbye. Philippe drove back to the suburb of Brussels where he lives, Michiel took the train back to Rotterdam, and I took a train to Luxembourg where I was going to spend the next two days, attending a course on EU law.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 8<\/em><br \/>\nThe weather in Luxembourg was not nice at all:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt8.jpg\" alt=\"L1002255\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 9<\/em><br \/>\nAnd in general, it is a very quiet city (a less charitable person might even call it boring):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt9.jpg\" alt=\"L1002258\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 10<\/em><br \/>\nPeople shelter as best they can:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt10.jpg\" alt=\"L1002268\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday evening, enriched with knowledge, I took the train to D\u00c3\u0192\u00c2\u00bcsseldorf where I was going to spend the night before flying home to Alicante Wednesday morning (Luxembourg does not have very good connections to Spain).<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 11<\/em><br \/>\nD\u00c3\u0192\u00c2\u00bcsseldorf proved to be a much livelier place, particularly as regards watering holes:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt11.jpg\" alt=\"L1002277\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 12<\/em><br \/>\nBeer and footie&#8211;what can be better on a cold winter night?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt12.jpg\" alt=\"L1002294\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 13<\/em><br \/>\nA pensive girl at D\u00c3\u0192\u00c2\u00bcsseldorf airport Wednesday morning:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt13.jpg\" alt=\"L1002299\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 14<\/em><br \/>\nI never found out if she was wiping a tear from her friend&#8217;s face or just correcting some makeup flaw:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2009\/6alt14.jpg\" alt=\"L1002300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back in Alicante, life and work resumed. Friday evening we attended a wine tasting at a local wine shop, La Bodega.
