{"id":170,"date":"2008-12-06T11:11:28","date_gmt":"2008-12-06T10:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fotocycle.dk:80\/paws\/?page_id=170"},"modified":"2008-12-06T11:11:28","modified_gmt":"2008-12-06T10:11:28","slug":"week-49-mountains-and-light","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.fotocycle.dk\/paws\/?page_id=170","title":{"rendered":"Week 49: mountains and light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week (until yesterday, Friday) the winter blast has continued. &#8220;Winter blast&#8221; is a relative concept; here in Alicante it just means that daytime highs do not surpass 15 \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u20ac\u017e\u00c6\u2019 and nighttime lows can get down to 5 \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u20ac\u017e\u00c6\u2019. But certainly nothing like the rest of Spain, much of which has been hit with snow and freezing weather. We just watch it on TV. And today, as I write this, I had to change from sweatshirt to t-shirt because it got too warm.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, winter can be nice, so last Saturday I drove up to the mountains that surround Alicante, hoping to see some snow. No such luck, but it still yielded the first several pictures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is the view from the small town of Busot, about 20 km away:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/49.jpg\" alt=\"B305458\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nThe alternates<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 1<\/em><br \/>\nBirds on wire, Busot:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/49alt1.jpg\" alt=\"B305461\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 2<\/em><br \/>\nBusot is the kind of place where people and animals spend time looking out from their houses to see what is happening:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/49alt2.jpg\" alt=\"B305470\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 3<\/em><br \/>\nAs is often the case in small towns in Spain, the local cemetery is located on a hilltop above the town, and the graves are above-ground:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/49alt3.jpg\" alt=\"B305456-Edit\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 4<\/em><br \/>\nI then moved on to the town of Jijona (Xixona in the local dialect, Valenciano), best known as the place where the famous Turron de Alicante is made. A typical sight in coastal Spain&#8211;an empty plot where the only sign of construction are the increasingly shrill billboards advertising new apartments:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/49alt7.jpg\" alt=\"B305454\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 8<\/em><br \/>\nIn the centre of Alicante, the Christmas tree in front of the town hall is being decorated:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/49alt8.jpg\" alt=\"C025494\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 9<\/em><br \/>\nFrom my house, in the distance, traces of winter are visible on the mountain ridge.
