During the summer it is famous for being the haven for loutish, drunk Brits and other Northern Europeans. During the autumn and winter it is more peaceful. The population of the town consists of the local Spanish residents, and northern retirees who have second homes in Spain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main<\/strong><br \/>\nThis triangular rock is the symbol of Benidorm:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41.jpg\" alt=\"A054586\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nThe alternates<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 1<\/em><br \/>\nThe beach is dominated by people of a certain age, especially before noon. No se\u00c3\u0192\u00c2\u00b1oritas here:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt1.jpg\" alt=\"A054579\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 2<\/em><br \/>\nThe cat is stray, but obviously not afraid of people, and apparently also well fed:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt2.jpg\" alt=\"A054588\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 3<\/em><br \/>\nA nap in the harbour:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt3.jpg\" alt=\"A054595\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 4<\/em><br \/>\nTypical Benidorm bar&#8211;more signs in English or German than in Spanish. But their choice of beer to promote was classy:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt4.jpg\" alt=\"A054599\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 5<\/em><br \/>\nNow back in Alicante, some people are having an autumn picnic on Playa San Juan:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt5.jpg\" alt=\"A054620\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 6<\/em><br \/>\nNear my house, I saw this love declaration while walking my dog. Certainly a cut above the usual heart with two names:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt6.jpg\" alt=\"A054570\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The pictures so far have been from the early part of the week. Around mid-week the clouds started rolling in, and the weather forecasters started talking about the usual  October storm and flooding that was heading our way.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 7<\/em><br \/>\nWednesday afternoon, the view from the back terrace of my office. So far it just looks pretty:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt7.jpg\" alt=\"A080432-Edit\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 8<\/em><br \/>\nThe next day, our beach looks like this:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt8.jpg\" alt=\"A090445\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 9<\/em><br \/>\nThe day after, not much improvement:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt9.jpg\" alt=\"A104662-Edit\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 10<\/em><br \/>\nThe strong wind blows sand from the beach onto the tram tracks in certain places, so workers have to come and clean the tracks:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/41alt10.jpg\" alt=\"A104668\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With all this bad weather, I shift to domestic pursuits for the last three pictures. My sister cooks Polish food for us when she visits, and one evening she made one of my favourites, go\u00c3\u2026\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c3\u201e\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6bki. Literally the word means &#8220;little pigeons&#8221;. I have no idea why this name.
