It is autumn in Alicante, probably the best time of the year. It is still hot during the day, but not as stiflingly hot as in July and August; and during the night, the temperature falls to 18-20 \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u20ac\u017e\u00c6\u2019, making an evening stroll a refreshing experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main<\/strong><br \/>\nMy morning routine is to prepare the day&#8217;s first cup of coffee and sit on my porch. I also usually take a look at the construction across the street, and occasionally I am rewarded with nice views like this:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38.jpg\" alt=\"9174169\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nThe alternates<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 1<\/em><br \/>\nMy son&#8217;s friend Chris was here until Tuesday. On Saturday night the two boys went out Spanish style, meaning that they came home around 7 Sunday morning. Here they are, getting breakfast around 2 p.m. on Sunday, consisting of reheated curry from the previous day, washed down with milk. Allegedly a good hangover cure:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt1.jpg\" alt=\"9144156\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 2<\/em><br \/>\nAbout four hours later, the two were sufficiently recovered to enjoy a mojito served to them in our swimming pool:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt2.jpg\" alt=\"9144164\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 3<\/em><br \/>\nMonday evening, we had an after-work event for a departing senior executive. It was held at Isla Marina, a (very) high-end tapas place right on the shore. Of course, there was going to be a speech:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt3.jpg\" alt=\"9150374\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 4<\/em><br \/>\nOur in-house photographer was there, of course:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt4.jpg\" alt=\"9150375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 5<\/em><br \/>\nThis was the general setting:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt5.jpg\" alt=\"9150391\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 6<\/em><br \/>\nAs evening fell, the light became magical:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt6.jpg\" alt=\"9150393\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The remaining pictures are from a Friday afternoon walk in the city. This year, the Volvo Ocean Race originates in Alicante, with the start on October 11th. On Friday, the Race Village was officially opened to the public. It is basically a temporary complex of bars, restaurants and various attractions next to the pier where the 7 teams are making their final preparations.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 7<\/em><br \/>\nWhen I came to Alicante last year, this was just a decrepid seawall. Now it has been turned into a nice pier:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt7.jpg\" alt=\"9190415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 8<\/em><br \/>\nThe city has hired a lot of  &#8220;human billboards&#8221; to promote the events:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt8.jpg\" alt=\"9190418\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 9<\/em><br \/>\nEven non-human ones:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt9.jpg\" alt=\"9190421\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 10<\/em><br \/>\nThis method of advertising is quite common here, so they ran into people handing out handbills for some bar or restaurant:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2008\/38alt10.jpg\" alt=\"9190420\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alternate 11<\/em><br \/>\nThe police are out and about, mainly to prevent the street vendors and assorted beggars from harassing the visitors too much.
