We did make a day trip to Washington, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36_1<\/strong><br \/>\nEveryone who has visited the US knows that the flag is everywhere. I present three examples here. The first is from the apartment complex in Lansdale where my son lives:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_1.jpg\" alt=\"R001708\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_2<\/strong><br \/>\nA more upscale Lansdale home:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_2.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_3<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd in South Philadelphia:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_3.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_4<\/strong><br \/>\nWe drove down to Washington for a day, mainly to visit the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Air and Space Museum. It was my son&#8217;s idea to take my father WW2 victory medal and pose with it in the Remembrance Hall of the Holocaust museum:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_4.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7440\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_5<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_5.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7439\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_6<\/strong><br \/>\nThe front of the medal, with the Polish eagle:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_6.jpg\" alt=\"R001725\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_7<\/strong><br \/>\nThe back of the medal. Compared to when we left the US 20 years ago, the beer scene here has exploded:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_21.jpg\" alt=\"R001742\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_22<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Smokehouse is a restaurant just a few minutes walk from Moses&#8217;s apartment:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_22.jpg\" alt=\"R001744\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_23<\/strong><br \/>\nTheir Buffalo wings were very good, although the &#8220;suicide&#8221; version I ordered was a misnomer; by Buffalo standards these were &#8220;medium&#8221;:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_23.jpg\" alt=\"R001746\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_24<\/strong><br \/>\nOne evening we went to see the Phillies against the Blue Jays. We enjoyed the experience, although we left after the 7th inning when it was clear that the Phillies were not going to come back from behind, training 8-5. They didn&#8217;t:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_24.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7504\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_25<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother day I went to South Philadelphia with my daughter to visit a piercing shop where she wanted to have some adjustments done. Already walking from the parking to the shop, I could see that this was an interesting neighbourhood:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_25.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7526\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_26<\/strong><br \/>\nThe neighbourhood is full of interesting signs and shop fronts:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_26.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7535\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_27<\/strong><br \/>\nEven the traffic islands can be interesting. Note the hipster type walking down the street, a typical inhabitant of this part of the city:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_27.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7535\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_28<\/strong><br \/>\nTatoo parlour:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_28.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7537\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_29<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Pope is coming to visit Philaldephia in September. The merchants are ready:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_29.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7540\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_30<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_30.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7564\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_31<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is a wonderful little side street called Kater Street. I turned into this street and was met by a world of wonderful murals:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_31.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7553\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_32<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_32.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7541\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_33<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_33.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7545\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_34<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_34.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7544\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_35<\/strong><br \/>\nThere was also some kind of Buddhist temple:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_35.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7542\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_36<\/strong><br \/>\nBut most striking were the mosaics:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_36.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7546\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_37<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_37.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7548\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_38<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_38.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7550\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_39<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_39.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7551\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_40<\/strong><br \/>\nAt some point, this guy came out from one of the houses, and we had a brief chat. He told me that most of the mosaics I had just photographed were made by his father:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_40.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7554\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_41<\/strong><br \/>\nI continued to wander through the neighbourhood, marvelling at the creativity expressed in the signs and street art:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_41.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7555\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_42<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_42.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7556\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_43<\/strong><br \/>\nFire station:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_43.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7560\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_44<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_44.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7559\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_45<\/strong><br \/>\nDon&#8217;t smoke!:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_45.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7565\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_46<\/strong><br \/>\nWe then went north, to the area around City Hall and the Temple University Center City campus, where I took my MBA classes back in 1991-93. This is a completely different Philadelphia:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_46.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7569\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_47<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_47.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7568\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_48<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_48.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7571\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_49<\/strong><br \/>\nI loved this sculpture by Claes Oldenburg:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_49.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7572\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_50<\/strong><br \/>\nUrban fauna:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_50.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7574\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The final few images are from a Saturday drive to Amish country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36_51<\/strong><br \/>\nWe drove to Intercourse, supposedly the main Amish town in Lancaster county. Unsurprisingly, the town sign gets stolen from time to time:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"uploads\/2015\/36_51.jpg\" alt=\"DSF7592\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>36_52<\/strong><br \/>\nI found Intercourse a bit too Disneyfied.
