My dog Cheeta (the bigger one of the two) exchanges greetings with another dog we met on our walk: Then on Saturday night, a group of us, mostly 40-ish and mostly English couples, went for a night out in Amsterdam, leaving our children to fend for themselves, well-equipped with money for pizza deliveries and such. We started at Boom Chicago, a comedy club on Leidseplein run by exiled Americans. It is very crowded, very smokey and very funny. They don’t shy away from controversial topics and insult everyone in equal measure. The evening’s skits included Osama bin Laden taping a video for a dating service, a conversation between a religious Jew and a Palestinian suicide bomber, and a somewhat modified dialogue between Jesus and his disciples during the Last Supper. Audience participation is sometimes required, so it is best to keep oneself well-oiled: Among our group was this lovely lady who is recovering from cancer treatment. We were all very happy to see her in good mood and out with us: After Boom Chicago, we walked to a nearby whisky bar, horsing around along the way. This is the kind of behaviour that deeply embarasses our children (my own contribution, besides taking this picture, was a beautiful and loud rendition of Whisky in the Jar<\/em> and The Leaving of Liverpool<\/em>): The whisky bar was a revelation.
